Saxony-Anhalt is where the rediscovery of classical antiquity north of the Alps began. For six months it is hosting the largest and most comprehensive exhibition on Pompeii in recent years, at the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle.

Many of the outstanding exhibits on show have never been seen outside Italy before. Others - like the wonderful frescoes from the triclinium at Moregine - are being loaned for the final time. The idea behind the exhibition is entirely novel: it traces the human lives and many natural disasters at the foot of Vesuvius over the course of several thousand years.

This special exhibition of the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle has been developed in cooperation with the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Napoli e Pompei, the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and the Kulturstiftung DessauWörlitz.

The State Exhibition is held under the auspices of the Presidente della Repubblica Italiana, On. Dr. Giorgio Napolitano, and the Präsident der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
