One focus of the section for Historic Parks and Gardens is on providing expert guidance, supervision and coordination for maintenance and restoration work in protected historic gardens, parks, cemeteries and designed landscapes, including their equipment and furnishings, in the whole of the State of Saxony-Anhalt. In the context of an official consultation with local-government Conservation Authorities, scientific assessments and opinions are drawn up about any planned interventions in a historic park. Other tasks include: providing expert advice to the owners of a monument, to Conservation Authorities and other interested parties; creating a comprehensive register of monuments, and evaluating and determining a site or area's character as of special historic interest; close cooperation with universities and technical colleges on specific topics of park conservation; continuing education for participants in projects; and informing the public about our work.

A central element is the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which raises major issues about the preservation and protection of the historic cultural landscape. The tasks here include continuous expert supervision while development concepts and management plans are drawn up. Another important project is the scientific component in the State project Gartenträume ('Garden Dreams').

This section of the Conservation Office maintains contacts throughout Germany through its participation in the Work-group for Park and Garden Conservation of the Vereinigung der Landesdenkmalpfleger in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Association of State Conservation Staff in the Federal Republic of Germany), and in the research circle on historic parks of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gartenkunst und Landespflege (DGGL, 'German Society for Gardening and Land Management').
