State Museum of Prehistory

Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte Halle
The State Museum of Saxony-Anhalt in Halle is known throughout the world as the home of the Nebra Sky Disc, but even without this spectacular find the museum would be outstanding. It is a part of the archaeological conservation service in Saxony-Anhalt and hosts one of the oldest, most extensive and most important archaeological collections in Germany.

Department for Historic Buildings and Works of Art

The Department for Historic Buildings and Works of Art of the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology is the expert office that advises the various Conservation Authorities, in ministries and local and communal government, but also the owners of monuments and their architects, restorers and craftspersons on all issues requiring conservation expertise.

Archaeological Conservation

The Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt is unusually rich in archaeological monuments from all prehistoric, ancient and mediaeval eras. The cause, and the continuing basis, for this is above all the outstanding quality of the agricultural land, especially in the southern and central parts of the State, which have always provided ideal conditions for population groups that depend on farming. The climate is comparatively favourable and the region is well placed geographically in relation to transit routes, as well as having rich sources of raw materials. As a result, the archaeological landscape stands out even in a European context as being unusually rich and complex.

Overall Specialised Services

Archive, Bibliothek und Sammlung
The archives, library and collection are the cultural memory of Saxony-Anhalt. They are responsible for the recording, administration, availability and secure long-term preservation of its cultural heritage in relation to conservation of historic monuments and archaeology, in physical, archival and published form.

The Nebra Sky Disc

Himmelsscheibe von Nebra
The Sky Disc is one of the most important archaeological finds of the past century. It displays the world's oldest known concrete depiction of astronomical phenomena. The object's significance is reflected by its inclusion into the UNESCO's Memory of the World register in June 2013.
