The State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology - State Museum for Prehistory (LDA)  is a subsidiary authority of the State Chancellery and Ministry of Culture. It was founded, with effect from 01.01.2004, out of two formerly independent offices: the State Office for the Conservation of Historic Monuments and the State Office for Archaeology.

The statutory basis of the work of the LDA is the Law on the Protection of Historic Monuments (Denkmalschutzgesetz, in German).

The LDA is subdivided into five departments:

Conservation of Historic Buildings and Artworks

General Specialist Services, together with archives, library and collections

 Conservation of Archaeological Monuments

 State Museum.

The LDA makes use of a number of properties in the city of Halle (Saale). Before visiting, please find out the location of the person you wish to see, via the switchboard at tel. 0345/5247-580.

The Administration Department is responsible for the central administration of the whole Conservation Office (LDA), including personnel matters.

There are job opportunities at the LDA, in the form of short-term activities, especially in excavation projects, as well as voluntary work and internships. Currently available positions can be found under the rubric News (in German).
