10th Archaeological Conference of Central Germany

Surplus without the State - Political forms in Prehistory

The Archaeological Conference of Central Germany
International conference in Halle (Saale), October 19th - 21st, 2017

is hosted annually by the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt. It is an international meeting which takes up a current topic and promotes a scientific discussion by consulting and contrasting the expertise of the relevant specialists in order to gain fundamental new insights.

This year’s conference is devoted to the topic “Surplus without the State - political forms in Prehistory”. The conference aims to take a comparative approach on forms of socio-political organisation in a global and diachronic perspective. Specifically we wish to focus on societies, which reached economic, demographic, architectural and ceremonial achievements without matching our “classic” definition of the state. We feel this is a political and historic topic which has been addressed previously, but has never been sole and direct focus.

In this sense, the conference also aims to address the reasons for growth and decline of certain forms of socio-political organisation. Case studies will be presented from Europe, Africa as well as North and South America.

Flyer and abstracts of the talks are following.
